Guy's talks on the MPA exhibition stand at Focus on Imaging 2009 stopped the traffic - the entire aisle space was taken up by an audience which extended well beyond the seating area. He will be unveiling some new learning methods.

He's also recently received his Fellowship of the MPA for his outstanding tuition over the past three years. This really is a programme not to be missed.

How time flies! Looking back year 2009, myself and our team at JLP agreed that it has been amazing!!

The Exodus

If you don't already know it, we have two (2) business identities now i.e. JIM LIAW and JLP by Jim Liaw (which is launched in January 2009). Jim Liaw will still shoot exclusive and beautiful weddings while Braendan Yong and John Seah JLP, our senior photographers, will be shooting under JLP. They are personally and specifically trained by myself in handling both wedding portraiture and wedding day photography series. Till date; believe it or not; they are very popular and highly sought by to-be brides and grooms this year (2010).

A weekend with the Nikonian

In March 2009, working hand-in-hand with Nikonian Academy, I have conducted a photography workshop. It was such an amazing workshop and I have a fond memory of it especially those who had attended my previous workshops came back to seek further information and knowledge. Well done!

Destination Pre-wedding to Paris

Myself and Ning had a wonderful trip to Paris for 2 weeks to photograph fine art wedding portraits (FAWP) with three (3) lovely Malaysian couples who are based in London. Since it is summer when the day broke so early and ended late, both the Bride & Groom together with Sharon, our all time make-up stylist partner, had to start their styling sessions as early as 4:00 a.m. The first session ended around 11:00 a.m. as the contrast is too wide for the camera to handle. Then, we started shooting again around 8:30p.m. and called it a day past midnight around 12:30a.m. Shooting FAWP, one after another, I recalled that people on the street was watching and starring at us when one of three couples came out from the underground metro subway at Elysses in their suit & tie and wedding gown and while we had our “dinner” at McDonalds. Wow, what a fun session!

An 'Escapade' to Melbourne

I took my family to Melbourne for holiday as well as learning the album design software from Album Australia. We also met up with our former clients and delighted to be informed that they have an additional family member. I experienced their happiness, joy & greatest love, and happy that they now assume not only the role of a husband and wife but father and mother. Congratulations from myself, Ning & Clement!

911 Workshop

The two (2) days 911 Workshop at Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort, Ipoh was a success. We have overlooked that it is the Muslim fasting month, but we still went ahead with the workshop and happy to know that there is a muslim participant. We are blessed with a real life model during live shooting session. We had a wonderful photo retouching & sharing session. It was an amazing workshop and unfortunately it has to end early because some participant has to go back to Singapore and Kuching. Personally, in addition to conducting and training for the workshop, the best experienced I learnt from this workshop is the pool of experiences from the participants' diversified industry background, which they brought along with them. The friendship bond established does not end just at saying “goodbye”, “Take care” and “See you soon”, the 'saga' continues in Facebook. Not only that, those who resides in KL are having their teh-tarik sessions. Also, I have trainees who asked me when will be my next workshop because they have not attending any since 911. Well, please be patient, we are still planning for it.

Master of Photographers' Association (MPA) in Singapore

Judges from the UK, Kelvin Wilson, Richard Dutkowski, Guy Gowan and MPA’s Chief Executive Colin Buck were in Singapore in October 2009. We have a record of 40 attendances and we are classified as Far East & South East Asia Region zone in MPA. It is here that the MPA has the most rapid growth and recruiting some of the best social talent. At this 2009 Singapore Masters Seminar, a trade sponsored event saw further 23 new members and 17 successful Associates and Fellows. The culmination of several years development programs, is now chaired by Ryan Wong, FMPA for Singapore and Jim Liaw FMPA for Malaysia.

Fellowship Award

It is my long term dream to be awarded Fellowship with MPA so I started working on my panel images at the very beginning of year 2009. Spending time deciding on the locations for the project, shooting the style and how I wanted to present it to the panel judges are tedious. The process i.e. the shooting, the post-processing, the colour management, the media selection for the prints and card mounted, images arrangement to be presented in a well-balanced way; took me more than a year altogether to complete my fellowship panel. In total, I had spent 2 years for the project. Failed my 1st attempt and got it the second year, 2009. It is totally WORTH IT & I LOVE IT. I strongly urge those enthusiastic professional photographers to start getting into the process. Don’t just let your clients assessing your work, do let your peers to judge them. You will come out stronger and well informed where you are and where are the areas that you need to improve. Find out your specialty and start market yourself. Most importantly, you gained yourself a good qualification from a world wide recognized institution and they are your proven skills and hard work. Come join us at the MPA Master Photographers.

A "Roaring" Year of the Tiger

JLP has entered the most busy festive and weddings jammed pack months i.e. shooting, post-processing, entertaining and socializing during Christmas, New Year & Chinese New Year's time. Seeing many of our Clients who are back from overseas and relatives, the experience of the inter-relationship is so good. What a year!!

The year 2010 will see our new studio to be ready around March / April. Wanting to shoot more contemporary and traditional classic portraitures, I decided to build a full scale studio with proper lighting equipment. Many of our former clients are asking for their family and babies portrait done. Really looking forward to shoot these sessions. With new cameras and equipments, the planning of getting these new toys are fun & exciting. And Jim Liaw Photography is entering a new photographic era.

A bubbly couple, Lilian and Niger walked into our Studio few days before their actual day wedding to discuss their final itinerary. After the whole discussion, we were intrigued by the fact that this wedding is going to be FUN!

Well, it's unbelievable that September is coming to an end. So many events has taken place. Starting with Wedding Isle Bridal Image Styling Workshop which was held on 22 August 2009 where Jim has been invited to share with the Brides to be "How To Look Good in Photos."

Next, there was the Big Bridal Sale organised by WeddingsbyEternal.Com which was held in Sime Darby Convention Centre on 5 & 6 Sept. Followed by our JLP 911 Workshop in Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort.

Pink & Ivan - Glamourous

It has always been my wish to be able to shoot some parasols on a wedding. And it so happened that my wish materialised in this garden wedding held few weeks ago in Sri Carcosa.

Our ever so glamorous and capable bride, Pink, and her charming groom, Ivan, planned their wedding so beautifully. Pink has heard about us and our works 5 - 6 years ago after attending a close friend's wedding and so they approached and engaged us nearly a year ago to photograph their wedding. Honored, we happily accepted the portfolio knowing that it will be a wedding which will be the talk of the town. Indeed, the occasion was full of surprises. It was a very romantic and colorful affair that I have ever photographed in Malaysia.

Ning, Braendan and myself started shooting during the morning preparation itself where Sharon and her styling team from Wedding Isle, skilfully making the bride and the girls beautiful. We were busy shooting the wedding gown and bits and pieces in the room.

The girls were so engrossed in helping the bride to dress up where they didn't even noticed my presence.

When they finally realised it and started to turn the bride away from my camera, I have snapped a few priceless shots.

Guests who attended the ceremony were full of personalities in their best and finest attires. Given the bride's name is PINK, you can easily guess the theme color of the wedding i.e. fuchsia pink and white with a touch of black. All decorations were artistically and tastefully set up by the creative team from Wishing Tree.

With the organisation, co-ordination and hard work from the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the wedding ceremony went smoothly under a clear blue sky. In such a romantic & enchanting setting and ambience, it is not surprising that the bride shed a few tears (it has to be tears of joy!). Guests who were there to witness would have shared the same sentiment. Or perhaps the ladies were sad realising that there gone another handsome single man marrying to their best friend. :p

Well Pink & Ivan, congratulations again on your recent marriage. Thank you for engaging us and your kind words. We had a real fun during the photography sessions.

There is one thing every bride will practically be concerned and anxious about on their wedding day i.e. the rain!! As if the preparation itself is not stressful enough, the weather is something beyond everyone's control.

It was showering heavily at early morning in Penang. By 8:00 a.m., it was still drizzling. The bride stood and looked out her window. She expressed her concern that she could not have her garden wedding. However, we assured her that the rain would eventually stop. So far, we are always been blessed with good weather even if it rained right before the actual wedding starts.

True enough, when the bride went down to get ready and right before the actual ceremony began, the drizzle stopped.

Eugene & Regina met through mutual friends. What turned out to be a simple meeting transformed into a wonderful union.

It was a simple yet beautiful wedding. The couple had put a lot of thoughts into their wedding where quotes (e.g. as per the title & beginning of this post) have been printed and labeled onto wedding favors as well as mineral water bottles.

To Eugene and Regina, congratulations again! Thank you for engaging us and your kind word. We really enjoyed ourself. :) The pictures are amazingly beautiful and here at JLP, we had a challenging time choosing images to be posted here and ended up ... well, as you can see the number of images we posted above :D

E-Lei & Choon Sern: Best Friend Forever

Love knows no boundaries or time zone, that's how it feels having read the love story between this lovely couple. Met since A-Level, both E-Lei & Choon Sern have been together ever since. Even though they were times they were apart i.e. different nationality, furthering studies overseas, national services etc., E-Lei, a Malaysian and Choon Sern, a Singaporean; decided to settle down in London. They even work under the same roof. Amazing!

The couple has set their mind on having a beach wedding and particularly Redang as they fell in love with the place during a visit 9 years ago. Moreover, one of the most unforgettable experiences they have had was having a BBQ under the stars by the beach.

And so they decided on Berjaya Redang Beach Resorts since it is very convenient for their overseas guests to fly in and out.

Well E-Lei & Choon Sern, despite the challenge to decorate the place due to inacessibility and logistics issue, the simple yet elegant decorations really set in the mood. Not forgetting the lovely landscape, crystal clear water, white sandy beach, coconut drinks & the twinkling stars - very magical & enchanting!

The images are magically fantastic that we've decided to present it in the form of a montage. Thank you for having us over and captured all these beautiful moments.

If you have not already heard, Signature Photographers has an additional new member i.e. Alvin Leong.

Alvin has been in the wedding photography industry for more than 8 years and is a member of Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), Master Photographer Association, United Kingdom (MPA, UK) and World Institute of Photographic Masters (WIPM).

In addition, Alvin is also the first Malaysian to have started a Photography Academy i.e. Alvin Leong Academy of Photography in collaboration with Open University Malaysia.

Happy Birthday Jim!

It was a last minute arrangement, we decided to surprise Jim a day after his birthday. Even Ning didn't know about it till the next day (but she is smart enough to dress up nicely :p). Since we know Jim loves his coffee very much, the only cake that fit the bill is Tiramisu and that I know Alexis has the best!

It was a long and exciting day but nevertheless everything went well according to the plan without Jim's suspicion although he had that quizzical look why all the team photographers were in the studio. The moment he ushered out the last client, he turned to our direction and started some casual chat while our creative designers brought out the cake. When they were right behind him, he still didn't suspect anything. Then, as we started singing, he turned around and saw the cake. This is how surprised he looked.

For a split second, Jim was speechless but kept smiling.

The cake is so nice that some of us had second helping. And because it contains alcohol, the team photographers later became jolly, perky & very loud ... I kid, I kiidddd!! :p

Well Jim, happy birthday again & many happy returns!!

Post Workshop: Secrets Of An International Wedding Photographer

In one weekend, JLP is invited to conduct two workshops. One of it was organised by Nikonian Academy at Dynasty Hotel for two days i.e. 23 & 24 May 2009. Enthusiastic participants who attended this workshop are not only from Klang Valley, but all the way from Penang & Johor.

In this workshop, the team from JLP shared the "trade-secrets" of the industry to eager participants and conduct some practical session where the best photo taken will be judged by Jim himself and the winner would walk away with RM500.00 worth of prizes.

Post Workshop: Great Photos, Great Moments

It is indeed a rare opportunity to see all seven signature photographers in the same room conducting a workshop one fine Sunday; sharing tips, advices and information to wed-to-be couples on how to achieve a stunning and beautiful wedding images.

Dressed in black attires ala Men In Black except for Jim who claimed that he was wearing black (but in stripes of course) together with special invited guest; Lee Kuen from Bridal Glam; they've shared very useful, informative and practical advices from planning to budgeting, skin tone to make-up and the most important element - communications (emphasize added) between Couples and designated photographers!

Hosted by Prince Hotel & Residences, couples who attended the Workshop had a chance to sample banquet foods i.e. Chinese, Malay & International. I must say the food is excellent until we have forgotten to snap pictures of it.

Organised the second time since last year, couples who participated at the Workshop brought home some goody bags. Some won exciting lucky draw prizes which are sponsored by various wedding vendors.

For the Grand Prize 2009, Elizabeth Foong and Erwin Goh walked away with Pre-wedding Portraiture Shoot sponsored by the Signature Photographers and Flaunt Weddings.

Workshop: Treasures Of The Rainforests Photography Challenge & Conference

The first of its kind in Malaysia, “Treasures of The Rainforests” Photography Challenge & Conference 2009 is organised by Alvin Leong Academy of Photography and Hilton Hotel, Kuching.

It will be held on 12 - 15 June 2009 in Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort, a 2-hour boat ride away from the famed Batang Ai National Park, Kuching, Sarawak.

KL Tower Wedding Fair

JLP participated in KL Tower Wedding Fair on 22 March 2009 which was organised by Weddings Malaysia. This is the first time JLP participated as a team minus the master photographer himself as he was away for wedding shoot in Penang.

All five of us arrived around 9:30a.m. to set up our booth and later were given the tasks & roles of the day.

We were given to understand that there were about 50 couples who attended the Fair. Perhaps we were occupied attending to couples who enquired at our booth and didn't pay much attention to the crowds who walked in and out from the room. This, we can confirm as one of the wedding suppliers later came up to us and commented that we were so occupied that she can't even get our attention or say hi!

Well, we participated in the Fair with no expectation (I know I don't). However, we know that we enjoyed ourself mingling with other wedding suppliers, couples as well as having fun snapping away during the Fair. Also, we believe we have gained greater learning curves, experiences & exposures from the Fair and getting to know our team mates better.

After a long day, we treated ourself to a nice dinner at Dragon-i. Great job team! Looking forward to our next team work. :-)

Dear Friends,

Finally, I have got myself a blog. Special thanks to my very hardworking studio manageress; Jacqueline; who assisted me in setting up one and informed all my friends, former and current clients that JLP has finally got a blog!! Of course, she also "nagged" at me to quickly finish this write up to be posted in here.

Some of my friends commented earlier that I will never going to have a blog as I do not have the time to sit & write. So when they saw me in Facebook, they can't believe such luck to see me in there. They asked me for 4-digit number as it is as good as striking a lottery. Thanks to you all, I finally joined the club!

My desire for this blog is to be as informative and interactive as it can possibly be and not just babbling about my photography i.e. coming and past projects. You will find what is the latest event, updates, promotions schemes etc. at JLP. I would also like to take advantage of this blog to share about photography techniques, retouching and treatment of prints. All questions on such subjects are welcome and I'll be happy to answer.

As per my title, my motto for year 2009 is "CHANGE"! JLP has come a very long way i.e. since 1992 where my wife; Ning and I started a portrait photography business in a small town, Witney, 12 miles away from Oxford city; purely for the love of people photography.

Now, after three years of setting up our little studio in KL, we found our lives and soul in both fine art wedding and portrait photography. Thanks very much to our ever supportive clients (current & former) who are residence all over the globe.

We have also evolved from a husband and wife venture to a current team of seven. We are focused and continue to research on our existing and future products to offer to our ever supportive clients. We vow to continue to improve our quality of services, final and finished presentations in albums, framing and prints finishing so we can serve you better. Not forgetting our photographic styles to cope with ever changing preferences and demands from our clients. Therefore, it really called for CHANGE(S)!!

I always believed that things will not stay and remain forever, especially in photography. The digital era has changed people's perception of photography. DSLR is a very affordable items now as compare to the analog era. More so, I met bride and groom's friends holding pro-cameras and lenses, that look even more professional than myself. This will definitely called for changes of skills and techniques that will differentiate us from them.

To date, we have changed all our framed portraits on our studio display wall to stylish and highly contemporary magazine presentations. I called them box frames with high gloss finishing on the prints. We love them and so does everyone who walks into the studio.

We have also changed our album sizes, album finishing and page layout designs to provide creative album finishing which our clients thoroughly deserved. We have employed new shooting techniques and style too, just to match the finishing requirement of the album, which called for more efficient and effective workflow, too.

These changes have improved the way we used to work and brought good to the business operations. We do hope to be able to deliver finished products to our Clients promptly. Given I am a person that gets bored easily & quickly, I need these changes to keep my passion and enthusiastic lively.

Greetings from JLP

Since this blog was set up a couple of weeks ago, we at JLP were brainstorming how should we approach it. At first, we thought of going through the stereotype way i.e. how do we begin and moving on from there yada yada yada ...

While the Master Photographer himself has yet to complete his assignment (gotten him to write the history of JLP), knowing that he has an exciting schedule, I thought probably we gotta have exception to the general rule of thumb.

So here is our first post to fill up the blank and hopefully won't leave it idle, too. Do stay tune for our update, coming promotions and many more.
